What they are and how they work
They're tubular filters containing activated carbon, the same principle used to purify air and water. The carbon traps part of the tar, particulate and irritants and softens the harshest flavours, giving a cleaner, fresher draw.
Difference from paper filters
Classic paper tips mainly give structure, stop the grind ending up in your mouth and keep the draw open. They don't filter for real. Activated carbon filters, on the other hand, actually filter: they're the choice for a smoother draw.
Which size: 6mm or 7mm
The most common size is 6mm (slim), handy and versatile. The 7mm (regular) lets a bit more air through, for a "fuller" draw. It's mostly personal preference: many keep both sizes.
When they're worth it
If you want a softer, less irritating draw, they're absolutely worth their cost. You'll find ActiTube and other filters in the filters and papers section, together with tips and papers.
