What NPK means
On every nutrient label you'll find three numbers: N-P-K, i.e. Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. Nitrogen (N) drives the vegetative growth of leaves and stems; phosphorus (P) is key for roots and flowering; potassium (K) regulates many processes and supports bloom.
There's no single "best" ratio: it changes with the plant's stage.
The stages: growth and bloom
In vegetative growth you need more nitrogen and a "grow" nutrient with higher N. In bloom the plant needs more phosphorus and potassium: you switch to a "bloom" nutrient and often add flowering stimulators.
Alongside these, use root stimulators in the first weeks and specific additives (e.g. for the substrate's microlife).
Organic or mineral? Soil or hydro?
Organic nutrients (e.g. the Biobizz line) work with the life of the substrate, are more forgiving and ideal in soil. Mineral ones (e.g. Canna, Hesi) are more direct and precise, perfect in hydroponics and coco where readily available nutrients are needed.
Choose the line based on your growing method and — importantly — stick to the same line: the products are designed to work together.
The most common mistake: over-fertilizing
Most problems come from giving too much, not too little. Start with reduced doses compared to the maker's chart, watch the plant and increase gradually. Keep an eye on the water's EC/pH if you grow in hydro.
When in doubt, less is better: a slightly under-fed plant recovers; one burnt by salts struggles far more.
Brands and how to choose
Rely on complete professional lines: Biobizz, Canna, Hesi and others. You'll find nutrients, stimulators, substrates and additives in the growing and nutrients section. FAQ
What do the NPK numbers mean?
They show the percentage of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K). N favours leaf and stem growth, P roots and flowering, K supports bloom and many vital processes.
Which nutrient in bloom?
In bloom you use a 'bloom' nutrient with more phosphorus and potassium, often together with a flowering stimulator. In growth you need more nitrogen instead.
Organic or mineral nutrients?
Organics work with the substrate's life and are ideal in soil; minerals are more direct and precise, great in hydro and coco. The key is to stick to the same line.
